Rhinoplasty – Aesthetic and Functional Nose Reconstruction

Rhinoplasty for facial harmony and improved breathing
Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure performed on the nose area, with the aim of either improving its appearance or restoring functional problems, such as difficulty breathing due to a deviated septum.
The nose is located in the center of the face and has a decisive influence on the overall harmony of the features. This is why rhinoplasty is considered one of the most demanding plastic surgery procedures. It requires delicate manipulations, experience, aesthetic perception and the right choice of technique, so that the result is natural, functional and perfectly harmonized with the face.
What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is the surgical procedure that corrects the shape, size, symmetry and function of the nose.
It can be carried out:
For aesthetic reasons
For operational reasons
For a combination of aesthetic and functional restoration
The goal of the surgery is not to create a "standard" nose, but a nose that fits the face, respects the natural features, and supports proper breathing.
What can we fix with rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty can correct:
Operational problems
Crooked diaphragm
Difficulty breathing
Nasal turbinate problems
Anatomical deformities affecting nasal function
Aesthetic problems
Nose size
A bump or hump on the bridge of the nose
tip rhinoplasty
Asymmetry
Flat or dropped top
General disharmony of the nose with the rest of the features
Proper rhinoplasty improves the nose without altering the identity of the face.
Types of rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is mainly divided into closed and open.
Closed rhinoplasty
In closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made internally, within the nasal mucosa. It is usually chosen in simpler cases, such as corrections to the tip of the nose or the bridge of the nose.
Its main advantage is that there is no external incision.
Open rhinoplasty
In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made in the styloid process, that is, in the area between the nostrils.
This technique offers the plastic surgeon better visibility and greater precision in correcting the nasal skeleton. It is often chosen in more complex cases, especially when aesthetic and functional problems coexist.
In cases of functional rehabilitation, the surgery can be performed in collaboration with an ENT specialist, so that the respiratory system can also be properly treated.
Who are suitable candidates?
Suitable candidates for rhinoplasty are men and women who:
They have completed their development
They want aesthetic improvement of the nose
They experience difficulty breathing.
They have a deviated septum or other functional problems
They have good general health
They have realistic expectations.
They want a natural result that suits their face
The first visit to the plastic surgeon
During the first visit, the plastic surgeon proceeds with a complete evaluation.
The process includes:
Medical history recording
Discussion of the reasons why you want rhinoplasty
Checking for aesthetic and functional problems
Reporting allergies, illnesses or medication
External examination of the nose
Nasal corner measurements
Checking the inside of the nose
Evaluation of the septum, nasal conchae and mucosa
The goal is to determine the patient's physical suitability and design the technique that will provide the best possible result.
Postoperative course
After rhinoplasty, the patient remains in the clinic for a few hours or, for precautionary reasons, overnight.
Should not drive for the first 24 hours.
It is normal for:
Edema
Bruising around the nose and eyes
Feeling of heaviness or discomfort
Nasal congestion
These symptoms gradually subside and usually improve significantly within the first week.
The special splint remains on the nose for approximately 10 days and helps stabilize and reattach the osteochondral skeleton.
Is rhinoplasty painful?
Although many believe that rhinoplasty is painful, in reality the pain is minimal to non-existent.
Any discomfort is easily treated with mild analgesics, according to the doctor's instructions.
Possible complications
As with any surgery, there are possible complications, although they are rare.
They may present:
Nosebleed
Contamination
Aesthetic deformities due to incorrect manipulations
Need for re-intervention in rare cases
Infection is extremely rare, as antibiotics are administered before and after the procedure. Choosing the right specialized plastic surgeon is crucial for safety and the quality of the result.
Rhinoplasty for a natural result and balance on the face
Rhinoplasty is a procedure that can dramatically improve facial harmony and, when necessary, respiratory function.
With proper planning, a specialized plastic surgeon and a personalized approach, the result can be natural, balanced and perfectly adapted to the characteristics of each face.

Advantages of rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty can offer:
Improving facial harmony
Natural and balanced result
Correction of nasal deformities
Improving breathing when there is a functional problem
Dealing with a crooked diaphragm
Profile improvement
Boosting self-confidence
Long-term effect
Combination of aesthetic and functional restoration
What is the appropriate age for rhinoplasty?
The minimum age to undergo rhinoplasty is usually 18 years.
The surgery should not be performed before the development of the bones and cartilage of the nose is complete, as there is a risk of asymmetry in the future.
It is equally important that the candidate has intellectual maturity, emotional stability, and realistic expectations for the outcome.

Preparation before blepharoplasty
Before the operation, the plastic surgeon takes a detailed medical history and examines the eye area.
Particular attention is paid to:
Allergies
Dry eye problems
Glaucoma
Retinal detachment
Previous eye surgeries
Taking anticoagulant medications
If there is a history of glaucoma or retinal detachment, an examination by an ophthalmologist is required before blepharoplasty.
If you are taking anticoagulant medication, the doctor may request a temporary interruption for a few days to reduce the risk of complications.
Are the results permanent?
The results of blepharoplasty last for many years.
In the upper eyelid area, over time and due to normal aging, excess skin may reappear and the surgery may need to be repeated.
In the lower eyelid area, the results are more permanent, as bags and excess fat are treated more definitively.

Where are the incisions made?
The incisions are designed in such a way as to be as inconspicuous as possible.
In upper blepharoplasty, the incision is made within the natural crease of the eyelid. Initially, it may be visible when the eyes are closed, but over time the scar fades and becomes inconspicuous.
In lower blepharoplasty, the incision is made just below the eyelashes and is not easily noticeable.
When access is made internally from the eyelid conjunctiva, there are no external signs.
Upper or lower blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty can be performed individually or in combination.
If the problem is located only in the upper eyelid, an upper blepharoplasty is performed. If it only concerns the bags or the lower eyelid, a lower blepharoplasty is performed.
In most cases, however, sagging and signs of aging affect both areas, which is why combined upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty is often performed.
How long should I wear the special corset?
The special pressure dressing is worn continuously for approximately 7 to 10 days.
Its use is particularly important, as:
reduces swelling
it helps in the proper re-adhesion of the tissues
contributes to shaping the final result
Improper use may increase the likelihood of hematoma formation.
frequently asked questions
When can I have rhinoplasty?
Usually after the age of 18, when the nose has completed development.
Is open or closed rhinoplasty better?
There is no one technique that is best for everyone. The choice depends on the problem, the anatomy of the nose, and the result we want to achieve.
Will I be able to breathe better after rhinoplasty?
If there is a functional problem, such as a deviated septum, rhinoplasty can be combined with functional rehabilitation to improve breathing.
Will the incision be visible in open rhinoplasty?
The incision is made on the styloid process, between the nostrils. Over time, it usually becomes inconspicuous.
How long will I wear a splint?
The splint usually remains in place for about 10 days.
Does rhinoplasty hurt?
Not particularly. The pain is minimal to non-existent and is treated with mild analgesics.
When do bruises go away?
Bruising and swelling usually subside significantly within about a week.

How is rhinoplasty performed?

Step 1: Introduction to the clinic
The patient is admitted to the clinic on the day of the surgery. Admission the day before is not required.

Step 2: Preoperative check-up
The usual tests are performed before each surgery, such as a complete blood count, a complete urinalysis, and an electrocardiogram.

Step 3: Anesthesia
Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia. In rare and simple cases of closed rhinoplasty, involving only the tip of the nose, local anesthesia or sedation may be applied.

Step 4: Choosing a technique
The plastic surgeon chooses the closed or open method, depending on the patient's needs.

Step 5: Nose correction
The necessary manipulations are performed on the bony and cartilaginous skeleton of the nose, in order to achieve the desired aesthetic and functional result.
